Spinoza l'étranger

L'intérêt que Daniel Pezeril a porté sa vie durant à la pensée non chrétienne est né de ses études de philosophie à la Sorbonne, pendant son noviciat chez les Oratoriens, et particulièrement du choc provoqué par la lecture de Spinoza. Il voulut, à la fin de sa vie, questionner une fois de plus celui qui figurait à ses yeux " l'étranger " par excellence. C'est en reprenant son vieil exemplaire de " L'Éthique " - commenté par Charles Appuhn, dans " Les Classiques Garnier ", et surchargé de ses propres notes – qu'il écrivit cet essai. La première version devait figurer dans " Le Christ étonné " et faire pendant à son étude sur saint Augustin, mais devant l'ampleur qu'elle prenait il y renonça. Nous avons en général suivi la seconde version en conservant les éclats de la première. [F. D.] -- The interest which Daniel Pezeril showed in non-Christian thinking all through his life was engendered by his studies at the Sorbonne, during his noviciate with the Oratorians, and in particular by the shock he experienced on reading Spinoza. It was his wish, at the end of his life, to question once more the man who, in his view, was 'the outsider' par excellence. Referring again to his old, well-thumbed copy of 'Ethics'(commented by Charles Appuhn, Les Classiques Garnier), littered with his own jottings – he wrote this essay. The first version was intended to figure in 'Le Christ étonné', extending his study of Saint Augustine, but when the author saw the how vast a project he had undertaken, he renounced. We have mostly followed the second version, while retaining the highlights of the first. [F. D.]
